Pastor Eric N. Carlson is a native Iowan, growing up in Ottumwa, Sioux City, Algona and Ankeny. He graduated from Ankeny High School in 1985, Luther College in 1989 and Luther Seminary in 1993. He served his internship year at Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Manchester, CT. Pastor Carlson was ordained in 1993 at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Des Moines, where he had been a member since 1979. His first call was to Trinity Lutheran Church in Mason City, followed by First Lutheran Church in Stoughton, WI, and Windsor Heights Lutheran Church in Windsor Heights, IA. Pastor Carlson currently serves as Assistant to the Bishop of the Southeastern Iowa Synod, which he began in 2009.
Pastor Carlson’s sense of call to ministry began as a child. His play time as a kid included leading imaginary funerals, weddings and worship services. His father was a pastor, and Pastor Carlson would spend hours imitating his dad in an empty sanctuary. Throughout his middle and high school years, several faith mentors played a crucial role in not only encouraging and nurturing Pastor Carlson’s sense of call to ministry, but also were tremendous witnesses to God’s good news made known in Jesus. His five years on summer staff of Lutheran Lakeside Camp solidified his call to Word and Sacrament Ministry.
Pastor Carlson states, “I am humbled and honored to be a candidate for the call as pastor of Faith Lutheran Church. Though I cherish my role in the Office of the Bishop, it is thrilling to consider returning to parish ministry, serving in a context that has such a strong foundation, gifted staff, passionate leaders, and where God’s people are called to grow in faith, proclaim the faith and live the faith…in the name of Jesus.”
