Funerals

At a person’s death, the church shares the grief for those who mourn and remembers the brevity of life on earth. At the funeral we give voice to sorrow, thank God for our loved one, and entrust this companion of ours into the hands of God. Trusting in God’s promise in baptism that we are claimed by Christ forever, we rest in the sure hope of the resurrection. When the church gathers to mark the end of life, Christ crucified and risen is the witness of worship, the strength of mutual consolation, and the hope of healing.

In a funeral service, we celebrate the value of this life and reaffirm our trust in God’s promise received in baptism: We are claimed by Christ forever. Scripture, prayers, songs, and words express the hopes and fears of grieving hearts.

Advanced planning of one’s funeral and other arrangements can be a blessing for those who remain and an assurance that one’s wishes are known. The resources below offer guidance in making decisions. Faith Lutheran members are encouraged to speak with a pastor about their wishes and the pastor will be happy to keep the planning document on file.
