“God of glory, we long to see your face, yet our vision is clouded by brokenness and sin. Breathe your creating Spirit into the hearts and hands of those who, through their work in the visual arts, desire to serve you. Through this ministry draw us to your truth and beauty, and bring us to the perfect fulfillment of standing in your unveiled glory, through your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen”

I have been drawing for as long as I can remember. While in high school, my interest peeked so that I wanted to explore my art further. As a result I graduated from Drake University in December 1970, with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree, majoring in Art Education and Tactile Arts. I substitute taught art for the Des Moines Public Schools for five years following graduation.
I married Harold in June, 1970 and setup housekeeping. A few years later we were blessed with two daughters, Marchelle and Melissa. Soon, life as wife and mother drew my attention away from drawing and painting. For the next several years my art lay dormant. I worked outside the home in retail and finally in banking, where I retired from Bankers Trust Company in December 2015. After the children grew up and moved out on their own, my interest in my art work again surfaced. I spent a couple of years refreshing my talent and then, in September 2012, had a show at Faith Lutheran Church.
My major in Tactile Arts covers a wide variety of fields, pottery, weaving, sculpture, silver-smithing among other things. Since the cost of these was prohibitive at the time, I have been concentrating on drawing. I love to use pencil, colored pencil, charcoal, pen and ink, and pastels. The last several years I have been drawing flowers and doing landscapes, although I do love to do fantasy drawings at times.
At present, I am continuing my art education through the Adult Education Program with the Des Moines Public Schools by taking a still life drawing class.
The Messiah Hall Art Gallery is located just northeast of the sanctuary and adjacent to St. Michael’s Hall. This wonderful space provides Faith with the opportunity to showcase the visual arts of our church members as well as artists from our local community.
Past exhibitions have included watercolors, oil paintings, drawings, prints, etchings, textile design, sculpture and photography on a wide variety of themes from still life to wild life; from flowers to fish; from landscapes to whimsical interpretations. Each artist brings his or her unique works to our congregation through the creative expression of God’s gifts.
Exhibitions revolve throughout the year.
