2012 Lenten Series - Who in the World are These People?
Wednesday Evenings at 7:15 p.m.

Many of us, maybe most or even all of us, know many of the major characters in the bible: Adam, Eve, Noah, Abraham, Sarah, Moses, and so on down through Jesus, the disciples, St Paul and others.

But there also are many characters in scripture who played minor, yet important, roles. During this Lenten season, we’ll look at six of these little-known characters and discuss their importance to the scriptural story.

Wednesday, February 29 - Jerubbaal
Wednesday, March 7 - Manoah
Wednesday, March 14 - Elimelich
Wednesday, March 21 - Elkanah
Wednesday, March 28 - Hadassah

egg hunt.JPGEaster Egg Hunt and Service Project

The Growing Families of Faith Ministry Team will be offering the annual Easter Egg Hunt for families and children age six years and younger on Sunday, April 1, at 3:30 p.m. in Messiah Hall. Please make a reservation with Kala at  kalazanoni@faithlc.org by March 26 if you plan to attend this event. We want to ensure that we are able to offer children at least five eggs each to find. Come join us for a fun-filled afternoon of bags to color, crafts, games to play and age-level Easter egg hunts! Due to the unpredictable weather, the egg hunt will be held indoors. Parents are expected to stay with their children during this event.

We would like to give families of younger children a chance to serve others as well. When you make a reservation for the egg hunt, let Kala know if you are interested in bringing an ingredient for the Salvation Army casseroles. Laura Wierup or Carol Engelmann will contact you about what to bring by March 29. Types of foods that you may be contacted to bring are two-cup packages of cheddar cheese, one-pound bags of cooked meat (diced ham, ground beef or sausage), one dozen eggs (not hard-boiled), one gallon of milk, or one 40-ounce box of Bisquick. Thank you!

Growing Families of Faith Ministry Team Service Project

We would like to invite families and their children to work together during Lent for a service project on Sunday, April 1, in St. Michael’s Hall from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. Families with children in 1st through 5th Grades are asked to bring two dozen hardboiled eggs with them to this service project event. We will be dying the eggs to give to mobile canteens for the Salvation Army. We will have rotating stations of egg dyeing, eggs casserole assembling and cookie decorating. The casseroles will be cooked and given to the Salvation Army to feed the homeless in Des Moines. Take advantage of this simple service project to do with your children in one hour. This is a parent/child activity! Please plan to have at least one parent stay. Please make a reservation with Kala  at kalazanoni@faithlc.org by March 29.

GF_blank.jpgGood Friday Family-Friendly Worship Service

Ten years ago when I became a parent, I knew there would be big and small changes I would have to make in my life.  One of the little worship changes I discovered was my first Good Friday service as a mother. I brought my (then) four-month-old to the service thinking he would just cuddle and sleep while I worshipped. It was a very somber service as all Good Friday services should be, but during that service my baby discovered that squeals and cues made great echoing sounds in the sanctuary. All of which would have just been drowned out with the singing and worship in a normal Sunday morning service, but in a meditative and somber service of Good Friday it seemed amplified. As my children got older, I would chose to skip out on Good Friday because of the clash with bedtime routine for my toddlers. When they were in early elementary school I thought the time had come that I could return to Good Friday worship. Attending the worship service with early elementary children, I found that the teaching of the crucifixion was just a little too grown-up for my children right before bedtime. So I have been absent from Good Friday worship a good many times since becoming a parent. My guess is that many of you have found yourself in that same worship dilemma.

Well, now you can worship as a family at Faith with a family-friendly Good Friday service at 5:45 p.m. Come and be part of the remembering of Christ’s death without being out late or sharing too much crucifixion information that your child may not be ready to hear. Our 4th and 5th grade Chime Choir will be our featured music for the evening. Join us for this important Holy Week celebration, and invite other families who may want to worship earlier rather than our normally offered 7:15 p.m. worship.
